What an amazing time the last 24 hours has been!!! Unbelievable. I
remember watching the news of MLK's assasination when in elementary
school, that dreadful balcony, and my father telling me how he'd met
Paul Robeson, the man with the big hands, the big voice, the great
soul, in 1960 when he toured Europe and about racial segregation in the
South, and then watching 'Roots' in the 1970s... and whatever our
knowledge of power systems, betrayal of ideals (think: Tony Blair/ Bill Clinton), the structures of power and the difficulties and all that, there is
no question that Obama's election to the presidency last night was
deeply moving and fundamental event. As Chavez of Venezuela said, no-one's expecting him to be a revolutionary, but if he's just someone who doesn't do war, that would be a good start. I'm afraid, though, that I am not as optimistic as I would like to be. Ordinary people have to organise. With regards to the President-Elect, I have to admit that I also remain fearful of assassination. I hope to God that my fears are groundless.
